The New Batman Adventures (1997)
Catwoman sports the Bruce Timm look
The producers of Batman: The Animated Series began The New Batman Adventures in 1997 as a way of maintaining the Bat franchise. Created by Bruce Timm, the series was set a few years ahead, and featured a new look and more adult storylines.
It also aired on a different TV network, too. While The Animated Series aired on FOX, The New Batman Adventures aired on The WB (now CW), which had begun operations in 1995.
Cast members from The Animated Series returned for this outing: Kevin Conroy, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Loren Lester, Bob Hastings … and, of course, Adrienne Barbeau. Her two episodes were:
- “You Scratch My Back,” originally aired on 15 November 1997.
- “Cult of the Cat,” originally aired on 19 September 1998.
And Selina Kyle underwent a physical change, wearing short dark hair instead of her blonde locks. The reason was that she had apparently found out that cats were used for hair dye testing.
The New Batman Adventures ran original episodes from 1997 to 1999. In 2003, a sequel video Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman was released. The show seemed to be a way for the overall animated series to bring itself to an end.
Carrie Kelley makes her first appearance on TV
Carrie Kelley made her first appearance on The New Adventure of Batman in 10 October 1998, in the episode “Legends of the Dark Knight.” The episode not only makes reference to the novel Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, but also pays homage to the Batman comic of the 1950s. The art work in this episode is amazing!
